Prevent the retrenchment of faculty and staff at Commonwealth University of PA
The Issue
Since its founding, the faculty and staff at Commonwealth University have been the bedrock of our academic community, fostering learning and growth among thousands of students. They've dedicated their lives to education, going above and beyond to ensure students receive the highest-quality learning experience possible. Now, they face an uncertain future as threats of retrenchment loom over their heads. These faculty and staff members are not just educators; rather, they are mentors, colleagues, friends, and invaluable assets to the Commonwealth University.
Retrenchment is not just an issue of losing jobs; it's about losing experience, passion, and the unique qualities that each person brings to the table. The relationships and bonds formed through years of collaboration between students and teachers create a vibrant learning atmosphere that cannot be replaced overnight. Cutting staff will severely impact the quality of education and research at Commonwealth University and deprive students of the well-rounded academic support they need to succeed.
Considering the financial challenges, it is understandable that tough decisions must be made. However, we implore the university administration to explore alternative solutions before making drastic cuts. Transparency in decision-making processes, as well as engaging faculty, staff, and students in discussions, are crucial steps towards identifying and implementing solutions collectively.
Moreover, it's important to highlight the impact that retrenchment has on Commonwealth University and the local community. This retrenchment aims to address our university-wide financial struggles. However, this will have the opposite effect, as faculty and staff not only contribute academically, but also economically, supporting local businesses and impacting social dynamics. Additionally, about 300 classes are expected to be no longer offered at CU if retrenchment is enacted. This will almost certainly amplify the already declining enrollment rate of CU, turning away thousands of prospective students. It is clear that retrenchment will have an immense, cascading effect, which will harm not just individuals but the entire university ecosystem.
We urge the university administration to reconsider its intent to retrench our faculty and staff. Let us focus on collaborative problem-solving approaches and place the welfare of our dedicated staff and students at the forefront of discussions. The future of Commonwealth University should be built on the strength of its people, not by reducing its workforce.
Students, as well as alumni, donors, and/or community members -- please sign this petition to support the faculty and staff at Commonwealth University and help save our cherished educational community. Your signature is a step towards solidarity and a brighter future for all members of Commonwealth University. Together, we can save our faculty and staff!
