Prevent the Purchase and Destruction of Howell Theater

The Issue

As a resident of Downtown Smithfield and a fervent supporter of our beloved Howell Theater, I am devastated at the imminent threat that our cherished venue faces. The Howell Theater sits at the heart of our community, serving as a hub for families and friends to unite and enjoy the magic of cinema. This theater certainly enriches the character of our small town, yet is, surprisingly, not currently recognized as a historical landmark.

The impending purchase and possible overhaul of the theater is a threat not only to the cultural fabric of Smithfield but also to our sense of community and to our families.  Maintaining this local theater could also allow the town to showcase independent and local artists within the community and provide more enriching opportunities for our children.

Notably, the Economic Development and Employability Committee (EDEC) reports that theaters like ours increase direct local expenditure by approximately $24.60 for each ticket bought, which includes the ticket price itself, dinners out, transportation, and babysitting services. This supports local businesses and boosts the economy.

It is therefore imperative that we recognize Howell Theater as a historical landmark, preserving its current state and ensuring that its charisma and economic contributions are not lost. In doing so, we protect our shared history, support our local economy, and maintain the essence of Smithfield. With this in mind, we call upon the Town Council to intervene and save the Howell Theater from being purchased and destroyed.

There is an interested party that would restore and revive the theater, but we need to show them and the Town Council that this is what we want!

Please, let's stand together to protect and preserve our iconic Howell Theater. Sign this petition. Your voice makes a difference!
