The Issue

Many years ago Hoquiam planted these Hedge Maples. As time has passed, these trees have grown, matured, and become an integral part of our urban forest. Today, however, they are under threat of being cut down to make way for a parking lot. Our trees, which provide shelter, beauty, and help to reduce our city's carbon footprint, are facing destruction for the sake of mere convenience.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, in urban areas, an individual tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year (“Benefits of urban trees"). In addition, they provide crucial habitats for the local wildlife, contribute to the overall attractiveness and quality of life in our city, and even boost property values. Beyond this, they serve as a living testament to our commitment to the environment and show the legacy we can leave for the future generations.

We cannot simply stand by and let the beauty and benefits of our trees be replaced with concrete and cars. Join us in this fight to protect Hoquiam’s urban forest. Don’t let our green legacy be cut down. Please, sign this petition, and together, we can save these trees.
