As someone directly protected by the Sierra Madre mountain range, I cannot stress enough the looming disaster we face if it continues to degrade. The Sierra Madre, often referred to as the "backbone" of Luzon, Philippines, serves as a critical shield against devastating typhoons. However, illegal logging and relentless deforestation continue to threaten this natural bastion. If left unchecked, these destructive actions could exacerbate our vulnerability to powerful typhoons, potentially causing irreparable harm to millions of lives and numerous ecosystems that depend on this mountain range.

According to Conservation International Philippines, the Sierra Madre harbors about 40% of the country's classified forests and is home to numerous threatened and endemic flora and fauna. If it continues to degrade, this could lead to the loss of many of these unique species.

Consequently, we call on relevant authorities, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, to strengthen law enforcement against illegal activities and instigate more defined conservation actions.
