I am a concerned resident of Crestview, FL, living directly across the proposed site for a new jail on Mt. Olive Rd. This is an issue that deeply affects me and my family as we fear for our safety and the tranquility of our community.

Our neighborhood is home to many families with children who deserve to live in an environment free from potential harm or disturbance caused by inmates housed so close to their homes. The risk of violent inmates escaping poses a significant threat to our community, potentially turning innocent residents into victims or even hostages.

Moreover, placing such an institution within our growing residential area could negatively impact property values and deter future families from settling here due to safety concerns. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, properties within two miles of a newly opened prison can experience up to 2% decrease in value (NBER).

We propose that this new jail be located closer to industrial areas where it would pose less risk and disruption for residential communities like ours.

The wellbeing and safety of Crestview's residents should be prioritized over convenience or cost-saving measures associated with building this facility in our neighborhood. We urge local authorities not just consider us but also other similar communities when making decisions about where correctional facilities are built.
