Prevent the closure of St Matthews Community Centre

The Issue

The St Matthews Community Centre is more than just a building—it is the heart of Leicester's community life, especially for those residing in St Matthews and its surrounding areas. My name is Zainab, and I’m a passionate volunteer for a charity called Women 4 Change CIC, run by four inspiring Somali women.

For years, I have witnessed first-hand the transformative impact that this community centre has on its users. It is a safe haven and a nurturing environment for children, youth, and adults alike. From our delightful play area for children aged 0-6 to our vibrant community library equipped with computers that are indispensable for students working on their homework—every corner of the centre is buzzing with community spirit and growth.

For teenagers and young adults aged 16-22, the centre offers a lively table tennis hall that not only promotes physical health but also builds camaraderie and team spirit. For women in the community, including myself, folk dancing sessions provide an opportunity for cultural expression, fitness, and social connection.

Leicester City Council’s proposal to close down this essential community resource would be a devastating blow to countless individuals and families who rely on the myriad of services and support it offers. The St Matthews Community Centre is a hub of inclusivity and cultural diversity, offering a safe space for fostering community ties and a sense of belonging.

It is not just about preserving a building. It’s about safeguarding a sanctuary where different generations come together, learn from one another, and contribute positively to our community. Instead of closing it, we urge the Leicester City Council to explore alternative solutions that can keep the doors of St Matthews Community Centre open.

We need to invest in our communities, not deplete them of their lifelines. Let us all unite to protect this invaluable resource for present residents and future generations. Please sign this petition to show your support for keeping St Matthews Community Centre open and thriving. Every signature counts in demonstrating to our city's decision-makers how much we value and depend on this vital community pillar.
