As students, alumni, and community members, this petition is deeply personal to us. CalState EastBay isn't just an educational institution- it's a diverse and inclusive space where students have the opportunity to be nurtured and profoundly transformed. Known as one of the most diverse public institutions in the country, CSUEB boasts many incredible opportunities, one being our cherished Theater and Dance Department. The Theatre and Dance program at CSUEB has been an incubator of creativity, agency and leadership for  students. The Theatre and Dance program is a haven and a place of belonging where students of all backgrounds can integrate what they learn in their studies into embodied and inclusive practices. This department has consistently demonstrated inclusivity, accepting all ages, abilities, bodies, styles, techniques, and lived experiences.  Upon graduation students are often out in the world building communities and making the world a better place using precisely the tools and experiences they gained here in collaboration, innovation and team building.

It has come to our grave concern that plans may be being made to cut this department, a move that threatens the rich variety and openness CSUEB stands for. 

Further, NOW is the precisely time to support the arts! The arts provide beauty amidst terror, cultural preservation amongst systemic dismantling, a slowing down when there’s literal and righteous urgency about everything, and a connection to the heart especially in times when our guard is (and often must be) protectively up.

It is therefore with fervor that we urge CSUEB leadership to reconsider any possible plans to cut the CSUEB Theater and Dance Department. The elimination of this department would not only lessen the opportunities for current students but future students who won't have the possibility to explore their potential and passion in arts and performance.
