My wife and I are at the Altamonte Springs Public Library every single day. It’s not just a place to borrow books—it's our community hub, our quiet retreat, and an irreplaceable resource. Imagine my shock when, while visiting on Friday, August 14, I was given an informal verbal notice that the library is scheduled to close on September 30, 2026. We’ve been down this road before. Just two years ago, we rallied together with a successful petition, garnering 1,415 signatures to keep our beloved library open. Now, we must unite once more to protect this vital institution.
The Altamonte Springs Public Library isn’t just shelves of books; it’s a lifeline for our community. It offers free internet access, classes for young children, enriching programs for adults, and spaces for local groups to meet. This library is often the first step towards self-improvement and education for many residents who cannot afford these resources elsewhere. The loss of the library would hit not only avid readers and students but also job seekers who rely on its computers and internet for applications and skill-building.
Financial pressures shouldn’t dictate the fate of our public resources, especially when libraries contribute so much economically, socially, and culturally to our community. Studies have shown that public libraries have a high return on investment. For example, a report by the American Library Association found that for every $1 invested in libraries, the community receives around $5 in economic benefits.
We’ve saved our library once before, and we can do it again. It’s time to show our local government that the library’s value extends far beyond its operational costs and that a vibrant community needs such a central resource to grow and thrive. Let's make it clear that Altamonte Springs deserves a public library that stays open.
