The Issue

Our children's school, Don Brewer Elementary, has been a beacon for nurturing youth for years. Its Brewers Best program is a tradition that motivates our children to excel both academically and behaviorally. This program shapes each child into their best selves, culminating in a recognition ceremony that includes their handprint on the walls of the school, an indelible testament to their hard work and dedication. Sadly, our beloved school currently faces the daunting threat of closure and forced merger.

Reports suggest that this action has been prompted by budget cuts and a desire for economic efficiency. However, such decisions must consider the impact on our children's well-being. The school closure not only undermines our children's educational opportunities but also symbolizes the loss of a beloved tradition that has tremendously benefited countless students. The proposed merger overlooks the essence of what makes our school so special - the Brewers Best program , the gifted program and behavior support unit program just to name a few.

Additionally, there are concerns regarding job displacement of our teachers and staff. Although teachers and staff have been advised they will have job placement at other schools in the county/ district, there are no guarantees as to when or where this may take place for them. Our beloved teachers and staff that our students and parents have grown to love over the years have become a valuable part of our children's lives. There are also housing developments underway in walking distance from the school that will bring an influx of students. As parents, teachers and staff we fear if this merger takes place, there will not be enough room for all the children. As a result, concerns regarding developmental growth and educational opportunities are arising.

But we, the community, parents, and children are not willing to accept this without a fight. Along with the school's remarkable staff, we believe that preserving these valuable traditions is essential to the holistic development of our children.

It's also important to recognize the fact that our school doubles as a hurricane shelter for our community. Our campus is by far much larger than the campus we are proposed to merge with , our schools infrastructure and facilities are newer than the school we're proposed to merge with and our campus is by far more safe and secure then the school we are proposed to merge with. Our school has been a valuable part of this community for over 20 years.

We are inviting everyone who believes in our cause to be a beacon, empowering children's futures and preserving our traditions. Please sign this petition and help us prevent the closure and forced merger of Don Brewer Elementary. Your signature could be the difference in saving not just a school but also a legacy of excellence befitting our children.
