Prevent the City of Corona from Increasing Recreational Field Rates

The Issue

As a Corona resident and a parent of two children who actively participate in multiple sports facilitated by our city parks, the proposed increase in field rates from $4/hr to $20/hr by the City of Corona deeply concerns me. The proposed fee hike is not just a simple increment, it's an overwhelming 500% elevation from the current rate.

This sudden surge could make participation in recreational sports in Corona unaffordable for an average family. With the increase in field rates, the registration fees for these sports would inevitably heighten, probably hitting a price that many families cannot accommodate in their budget.

The City of Corona defends this hike stating that neighboring cities charge similar rates. However, in reality, this is not the case. Several neighboring cities either don't charge recreational leagues any fees, or at best, they only levy a few dollars a day.

Sporting activities are more than just a hobby for young children – they are essential for their physical health, emotional well-being, and overall growth. Limiting access to them due to financial constraints is not fair to our future generations.

As concerned residents and parents, we request the City of Corona to revise its decision and consider the affordability aspect for the average families residing here. Sports shouldn't be a luxury only a few can afford; they should be accessible to all who wish to partake. Please sign this petition to keep recreation in Corona affordable and inclusive.

Dear Petition Supporters, Thank you for bringing your concerns about the increase in recreational field rates to our attention. The City Council recently became aware of the situation, and like you, we were shocked by the proposed changes. Tonight, the Parks and Recreation Commission will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the Corona City Hall Council Chambers, 400 South Vicentia Avenue. I encourage you all to attend so you can express your thoughts with the Commission. Please rest assured that we have requested a formal presentation from our staff to fully understand the details before any new fees are implemented. None of us on the Council want to create barriers that would prevent any youth from participating in sports, particularly those that uphold the values of inclusivity and "everyone plays" principles. We greatly appreciate your engagement on this important issue and your commitment to the well-being of our community’s youth. Thank you again for taking the time to voice your concerns. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that all our youth have access to the sports programs they deserve. Best regards, Wes Speake City Council Member, Corona
