Despite all of our efforts (including submitting our petition with over 4500 signatures directly to Superintendent Pearmain), Surrey Grade 7 band teachers have been informed this week that their positions for next year have been eliminated! This happed swiftly with no public announcement and has displaced our highly specialized and dedicated Band 7 teachers throughout the Surrey School District.
A district statement indicates “The board is focused on delivering on its core responsibilities as defined by the school act and examining programs that are not funded including elementary band”. Yet music is directly tied to core learning in literacy, numeracy and social emotional learning.
Please listen to and share this morning’s CBC Early Edition Interview with Grandview Heights parent Vanessa Prada. If you would like to share your voice with the CBC, please text them at 226-758-8924
They are planning to interview a school district representative next week and hopefully your questions and comments will be addressed.
