The Issue

The influx of short-term rental properties, primarily through platforms like Airbnb, is changing the fabric of our once tranquil family residential neighborhood. This issue is particularly important to our community, and requires immediate attention to protect the quality of life that we have cherished here for generations.

In recent years, the availability of short-term rental homes has skyrocketed, creating a commercial shift in areas that were never intended for transient occupants. A study by the Urban Institute shows a direct correlation between the rise of short-term rentals and the decline in available long-term rental units, leading to the decline in the social fabric of communities. Neighborhoods like ours are faced with increased noise, congestion, and a loss of community identity as houses are transformed into temporary accommodations.

Furthermore, the safety concerns are significant. Short-term rentals invite a constant turnover of strangers, which can lead to security issues and decreased trust within the community. A survey from the Pew Research Center found that communities with high short-term rental densities experience increased safety concerns among residents.

We are urging local government officials and city planners to implement stricter regulations on short-term rentals. And deny any short term applications for our community. Specifically application number 26115 for a residence on Ranchero Drive, Soquel.  Denying these applications will help protect our neighbourhood’s integrity and ensure it remains a safe and welcoming place for families to live.

Please join us in preserving the character and quality of our cherished neighborhood. Sign this petition and let your voice be heard in demanding a denial of application 261115.
