As a generational American and citizen, as well as a property owner within the City of Miami, I find it egregious that the City of Miami Commissioners have overreached their powers. The mere insinuation of any authority to extend their time in office without the citizens’ vote is not just inappropriate, it’s dictatorial. This move threatens the fundamental principles of democracy and undercuts the very fabric of citizen representation.

Miami Citizens have long cherished their right to choose their representatives through democratic elections. Granting commissioners the power to extend their terms unilaterally removes the people's voice from the equation, effectively disenfranchising voters and eroding trust in local governance. Such autocratic tendencies must be vehemently opposed to safeguard the democratic processes that our city, state, and country stand for.

Research conducted by the National Civic League shows that a majority of citizens favor term limits and regular elections as effective checks and balances on political power, ensuring accountability and preventing concentration of power. History has shown us that unchecked power often leads to governance that ignores the will and needs of the people. The City of Miami should not be exempt from these critical oversight mechanisms.

It is crucial for Miami's future that officials remain accountable to their constituents. By preventing elected officials from autonomously extending their terms, we uphold the integrity of the voting process. Citizens should have the power to decide if the current commissioners and mayor should remain in office based on their performance and policies.
