Prevent school shootings in Spokane Valley
Prevent school shootings in Spokane Valley
The Issue
Living in Spokane Valley, Washington, as a parent, student, or community member, we all share a fundamental concern: the safety of everyone within Evergreen Middle School and our broader educational environment. School should be a place of learning and growth, not fear. As someone who deeply cares about the well-being of kids, staff, and my own health and safety, I believe it is crucial to address the threat of school shootings with urgency.
Unfortunately, incidents of school shootings have become far too common across the United States. According to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, there have been over 300 school shootings since 2013. This statistic is not just a number; it represents lives and communities forever changed. Spokane Valley is part of this national narrative, but we can and must take action now to break this cycle of violence.
I am calling on the Spokane Valley School District, local law enforcement, and community leaders to come together and implement comprehensive safety measures. These measures should include enhanced security protocols, such as installing additional surveillance cameras, ensuring locked or monitored entry points, and increasing the presence of trained security personnel on campus.
Moreover, it is essential to incorporate mental health support and early intervention programs within our schools. Research from the American Psychological Association emphasizes the importance of mental health services in schools, which can help identify at-risk individuals early on and provide them with the help they need. By fostering a strong support system, we not only improve school safety but also contribute to a healthier, more supportive educational environment.
We also need to encourage open lines of communication between students, faculty, and parents. When everyone is informed and aware, the community becomes an active participant in maintaining safety and can swiftly respond to potential threats.
Let's rally together for the safety and future of our children and educators. Sign this petition to urge authorities to take concrete steps toward preventing school shootings in our area. Together, we can create a secure environment where learning can thrive without fear.
