The Issue

For those of us who enjoy the peacefulness of living in a tightly-knit community, we are set to face an enormous disruption if the Flagler County Planning and Development Board proceeds with its proposed plans. Living here has been a privilege for my family and me. The thought of having a three-story apartment commercial building merely 300 feet from my property line is both alarming and distressing.

Flagler County has long been a place where the charm and tranquility of residential life can flourish without immense commercial interruptions. The proposal to rezone a substantial portion of land from agricultural to mixed-use threatens to undermine this balance, imposing potential noise, traffic, and environmental challenges.

The proposed rezoning is set to occur right in the middle of a large, single-family residential neighborhood. It also backs onto our gated community, a space where my family and many others have invested not just financially, but emotionally. The implications of such a drastic change are profound: increased traffic congestion, noise pollution, and a potential decline in property values. These are more than just inconveniences – they are elements that strike at the very heart of our community.

Consider that Flagler County has specific zoning laws for a reason – to maintain the livelihood and character of our communities while assuring that development is both smart and sustainable. Many in our neighborhood have chosen to be a part of this region due to its commitment to these values. Opting for a short-sighted rezoning for apparent economic gain at the expense of our community’s well-being would be a grave mistake.

Studies have shown that sudden zoning changes can result in declines in local ecosystems. As per the Environmental Impact Research Group, increased urban development can lead to habitat destruction affecting local fauna and flora, further throwing the balance of our locality into disarray.

We urge the Flagler County Planning and Development Board to consider alternative solutions that offer potential for economic growth without infringing upon the residential areas that define our county. For instance, focusing on amplifying existing infrastructures or exploring brownfield sites to establish new commercial ventures.

Our community deserves to thrive without compromising the essence of what makes it special to live here. Please join me in urging the Flagler County Planning and Development Board to reconsider this rezoning proposal in favor of maintaining the integrity of our residential neighborhood.

Together, we can stand for a Flagler County that respects both progress and preservation. Sign the petition to protect our community from hasty rezoning.
