The Issue

Lambeth Council are proposing changes to Acre Lane with the intention of increasing the average speed on which buses travel on Acre Lane. We believe that the proposed changes do not address this goal and cause significant other problems.

The changes cover:

  • Removal of 51 parking bays in favour of a partial bus lane on some of Acre Lane, whilst changing 5 of these parking bays to loading only. According to Lambeth Council data these parking bays have high occupancy rates between 60-80%
  • Upgrading 2 informal pedestrian crossings to zebra crossings
  • Pavement build out in some areas, and adding continuous pedestrian crossings across side streets
  • Introduction of new signalised junction at Solon Road, Branksome Road junction

There are no changes proposed to the existing traffic light bottlenecks at the Brixton Road and Kings Avenue-Bedford Road junctions.

We believe that this proposal does not address the root cause of bus speed issues and causes the following problems:

  • Lack of private parking for residents posing issues for building work, disabled access, families etc.
  • Impacts local business access by reducing parking - both for deliveries and customers
  • Adds additional junctions without impacting current traffic lights, causing further traffic delays
  • Increases risk of accidents at continuous crossings

The proposal does not address the following challenges:

  • Parking non-compliance (double / triple parking) and traffic light violations at Kings Avenue-Bedford Road junction
  • Quality of paving / road surface
  • Buses turning at Kings Avenue-Bedford Road junction and at Lambeth Town Hall
  • Urban greening via initiatives like pocket parks
  • Space efficient cycling routes

We are asking Lambeth Council to change the proposals to retain residence and business parking access, whilst implementing other changes that will better address the challenges relating to traffic on Acre Lane at key junctions
