Prevent re-election after government shutdowns

Prevent re-election after government shutdowns
La causa
As a United States citizen and taxpayer, I find it absolutely disgraceful that congressmen are rewarded for shutting down the government. They should be severely punished for their incompetence. If a regular citizen doesn't do their job, they get fired. It should be no different for public officials. Honestly, it should be easier to fire public officials.
Government shutdowns have far-reaching impacts, from delaying pay for federal employees to interrupting vital services relied upon by millions of Americans. These are not mere inconveniences but serious disruptions with real consequences that affect the livelihood of countless citizens. Nevertheless, when these shutdowns occur, our government officials often seem insulated from these consequences, continuing to receive salaries and benefits while many suffer.
According to the Congressional Research Service, since 1976, there have been 21 gaps in federal funding, resulting in shutdowns that cause significant disruptions to government operations and the economy. Despite these repeated failures to pass budgetary legislation on time, our elected leaders face little to no repercussions. This lack of accountability is unacceptable and epitomizes a failure of representation.
I propose that in the event of a government shutdown, no senator, house member, or president should be eligible for reelection. This proposal aims to hold our leaders accountable and ensure they feel the urgency and responsibility of maintaining a functioning government, just as every American taxpayer expects.
Holding our elected officials accountable is essential to democracy. Elected leaders should prioritize the well-being of the nation and not allow political gamesmanship to derail governance. By ensuring that shutdowns have direct consequences for those in power, we can strive towards a more responsible political landscape.
Join me in urging our fellow citizens to support this proposal. Together, we can demand the accountability necessary to prevent future shutdowns and ensure that those in power act with integrity and responsibility. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and to advocate for a system that does not reward failure but promotes genuine representation and accountability in our government.
