The Issue

The Satilla River holds a special place in the heart of our community. It’s where we gather for baptisms, where our children learn to swim, where anglers cast their lines in hope of catching redbreasts. Families come to this serene spot to recreate, draw inspiration, and find solace in nature’s embrace. For many of us, whether we reside within the watershed or come from beyond, the river’s stunning beauty, with its inviting sandbars and scenic views, offers an unparalleled sense of peace and relaxation.

However, this cherished natural treasure is under threat. A proposed development plan aims to establish a poultry facility with 60 chicken houses right on the banks of the Satilla River in Douglas, GA. This not only jeopardizes the environmental integrity of the river but also the cultural and recreational significance it holds for our community.

The potential for pollution from such a facility is significant. Runoff from manure, feathers, and other waste byproducts could severely impact the river’s water quality, endangering the wildlife dependent on this ecosystem. This could also pose health risks to the residents who cherish the river for recreational activities. Moreover, the strong odors, noise pollution, and increased traffic from transport and facility operation can massively alter the natural serenity of the area.

There are better locations for such an industrial development, locations that do not endanger vital waterways or disturb local communities. We urge local authorities to reconsider the placement of this poultry facility. Alternative sites away from the riverbanks can provide a win-win situation where industry growth can coexist with environmental preservation.

Time is of the essence as our beloved river faces the potential of irreversible damage. Your voice matters in preserving the Satilla River for future generations, ensuring it remains an ecological and recreational haven.

Join us in this crucial fight to protect this irreplaceable natural heritage. Sign the petition to stop the development of the poultry facility on the banks of the Satilla River in Douglas, GA, and safeguard the health and legacy of our community.
