Prevent Overfishing!
The Issue
Overfishing is worse for the environment than most people think. It sets off a chain reaction. Overfishing affects not only fish, but also turtles, dolphins and sharks. Overfishing means there are fewer fish, and people who need fish to survive go hungry. A fisherman said " Me and my son go out every morning and cast out our nets. At the end of the day we bring the nets back in. If there is a good catch, my family and I will have something to eat that night.” If overfishing continues, fisheries will collapse leading to a food crisis. This will affect a lot of people. Overfishing is making the U.S. lose money, on top of other things the country is paying for. Restoring ecosystems costs 8 billion dollars per habitat. Rich countries pay millions to lag fishing industries. There are many solutions to overfishing, they have helped a little bit but not enough. We urge the government to implement these solutions. We should make fishing poles cheaper and nets more expensive to make people stop using nets. Making fishing seasons, such as fish for salmon in September to February. If you fish for other species during their mating seasons, the fish can replenish their numbers. Native Americans have used that solution, it has worked. Another solution is to have more people managing fishing. The government can employ people to monitor fisheries. That would also partially solve the problem of too few jobs. Having sustainable fishing will help the U.S. save money because they spend less money on importing fish. The fish you eat are probably from an overfished area. If overfishing doesn't stop, the whole economy will collapse. Act now before it is too late.
