The Issue

The establishment of a no barrier homeless sleep center within five miles of the center of Clarkston, WA raises significant concerns among local residents, businesses and property owners. While we acknowledge the importance of providing shelter and support to those experiencing homelessness, it is crucial that such facilities are located appropriately to balance their impacts on the local community.

Clarkston is a small city with a close-knit community that values safety and cohesion. Introducing a no barrier sleep center in close proximity to the heart of our city can potentially disrupt community dynamics, impact local businesses negatively, and create safety concerns regarding loitering or disturbances. This is not to suggest that those experiencing homelessness should not receive help, but rather that the facilities providing this help should be strategically placed.

The current proposal to allow a no barrier sleep center in a residential neighborhood, close to the Clarkston business center does not seem adequately thought out in terms of its impact on local residents and businesses. Statistics from the National Alliance to End Homelessness show that while such centers are essential, they require careful zoning and planning to avoid unintended consequences in local neighborhoods. The potential negative impact on quality of life, business profitability and property values cannot be ignored.

It's essential that the Clarkston City Council and Asotin County Commissioners take immediate action to seek better solutions and involve community stakeholders in the decision-making process.

Join us in urging these authorities to reconsider the location of this center. We believe that through thoughtful planning and collaboration, we can create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone. Please sign this petition to help keep Clarkston safe and thriving for all its residents and visitors.
