Prevent new data centers in Cleveland, Ohio
The Issue
My life is deeply rooted in Cleveland, Ohio. This is a city that has fostered my growth, nurtured my aspirations, and houses almost everything I love. From the vibrant cultural tapestry of our neighborhoods to the serene parks and community areas, Cleveland is so much more than just a place to live – it is indeed my home. Today, I am concerned about the rapid expansion of data centers that threaten to change our community’s landscape significantly.
Data centers require immense amounts of water and power, resources that our community and environment cannot afford to give lightly. A standard data center can use as much electricity as a small city, contributing significantly to our carbon footprint. In Cleveland, where we are committed to reducing emissions and enhancing sustainability, allowing more of these massive, resource-hungry facilities to establish themselves is a step in the wrong direction.
Furthermore, data centers create very few local jobs once operational. They offer limited opportunities for our residents, outnumbered by the disruption and potential detriment to our community’s infrastructure and environment. Rather than generating new opportunities, they tend to strip communities of their character and resources.
Numerous studies highlight the negative impact of data centers on their surrounding areas. According to a report by the Uptime Institute, data centers account for approximately 3% of global electricity use and contribute about 2% of all global carbon emissions. Our beautiful Metropolitan Cleveland community deserves better future planning that aligns with sustainable and economically viable growth strategies.
We need Cleveland's leaders to focus on attracting businesses that not only bring employment opportunities but also align with our community's long-term sustainability goals. Green technologies, arts, and education sectors show promising growth and align with Cleveland’s vibrant performance arts, music scenes, and educational institutions.
Please join me in urging the local authorities to reconsider their plans to allow the establishment of new data centers in our beloved city. Together, let us voice our support for sustainable development that preserves Cleveland for generations to come. Sign this petition and help safeguard what's deeply cherished in Cleveland.
