The Issue

It's come to the attention of the students and parents of the KMHS school community, that in response to SCUSD's initial supposed over-hiring of out-of-district teachers, many educators who've been pivotal in fostering KMHS's school ethos are at risk of being fired.

We feel that removing these teachers, whose contributions range from engendering clubs, fueling sports, heading extracurriculars, advocating for students, and increasing accessibility to higher education ON TOP of their long-term, impactful work as educators, would not only be a disservice to the students, but a major injustice to everyone who has worked alongside them on campus to make this school what it is today.

We find that there are too many other options the district can take to make the necessary budget cuts, that do not involve sacrificing so many valuable, accomplished instructors. Removing excessive outside consultations, platform subscriptions, and other costs and materials not directly conducive to learning or efficiently managing operations is a start.

Teachers make the school, and good teachers make every difference for students who want to learn. Having this many good teachers in one place is nothing short of a blessing. At KMHS, students want to learn, and they need these teachers here to support them. Their work is indispensable. They are indispensable, having given their all to SCUSD while here. These individuals cannot be replaced, and doing so would not only elicit the immediate outcry of the wider community, but only result in a downwards spiral of educational standards and quality.

Kathleen MacDonald High School has had numerous ups and downs since its inception, but with the help of the current instructor body, it has finally reached a point where students and staff alike can thrive. As it stands, there are only more benefits to reap and good policies to implement- keeping these instructors, who are beyond committed to their students, facilitates that. Please do not rob this school, which has only after four years become stable, of the very teachers who have worked so hard and sacrificed so much to make it so. We call upon the SCUSD School Board and the Board Vice President who resides over Trustee Area 1 where KMHS is located to stop this decision from going through.
