Prevent Job Cuts in EML Therapeutic Counseling Team For Immigrant Student Support

The Issue

PLEASE WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR DONATIONS. As mental health professionals providing support to one of the most vulnerable student populations within MCPS: immigrant children and families, we are distraught over the proposed job cuts. From our team of EML Therapeutic Counselors, 12 out of 26 of our invaluable members are set to lose their jobs. This decision, taken unilaterally without consulting our leadership or school communities, will have severe repercussions. A reduced team of 14 is expected to take on the workload originally borne by 26 people, potentially compromising the welfare and development of the students we serve. With our newcomer Emergent Multilingual Learners students' (Levels 1–4), our work is rooted in their support system—from registration to addressing critical situations to working with them at their home schools. Moreover, this proposed change, anticipated starting July 1, 2025, will stretch our team's resources to a dangerous extent. It is imperative that this decision be reconsidered—we cannot undermine the crucial support these immigrant children and their families need in their formative years while adjusting to a new culture and language. Please, sign this petition to raise your voice against this incredibly detrimental decision. Help us serve these youngsters better and give them the stability they deserve by saying NO to the proposed job cuts in the EML Therapeutic Counselors team.
