Prevent insurance coverage changes affecting IV Injections for macular degeneration

The issue

I dedicate my work to enhancing access to ophthalmology services managed in day hospitals, a critical component for eye care in our community.  I see firsthand the impact that these services have on the lives of countless individuals. Sadly, changes proposed to insurance coverage set to take effect on 1st  July 2026 are likely to negatively impact our patients' access to vital sight saving treatment for macular degeneration.

Statistics from the University of Birmingham School of Medicine reveal that over 80% of visual impairments can be entirely prevented with early detection and treatment, often facilitated by day hospital services. This vital access to services, however, hinges on appropriate insurance coverage, which is currently under threat due to pending changes.

Proposals suggest that coverage adjustments will be made, diminishing insurance reimbursements for IVI procedures conducted in day hospitals. This will lead to higher out-of-pocket expenses for patients, many of whom rely on these services to avoid permanent visual impairment or manage ongoing conditions. Without timely intervention, patients may face the harrowing reality of losing access to crucial treatments.

We can prevent this future by advocating for a delay or reconsideration of these proposed insurance changes. In engaging with stakeholders, policymakers, and insurance companies, we aim to find a balanced solution that ensures sustained access to recognised treatment for Macular degeneration and other retinal disease without imposing additional financial burdens on patients.

Our goal is clear: protect and preserve patients' rights to access essential sight saving  treatment for their eye disease . I urge all community members, especially those who have benefited from or value such  services, to join in this critical effort by signing this petition. Together, we can safeguard the future of our community's eye health. Let your voice be heard and make a difference today—sign the petition to stand up for the health and well-being of all who rely on these vital services.
