In our vibrant democracy, the voices of Canadian citizens are important . We, the citizens of Canada, elect Members of Parliament (MPs) to represent us based on our values and choices. However, when an MP chooses to 'cross the floor'—switching allegiance from one party to another without consulting their constituents—it undermines the very foundation of our democracy, leaving many of us feeling unheard and unrepresented.

A recent example has heightened this concern, as two MPs have made the decision to switch parties. This trend is concerning because it disrespects the will of the voters who elected the MPs under a specific party platform and ideology. There needs to be a fair system in place, ensuring that each change in party allegiance is a decision backed by the electorate of that riding, not just an individual decision by the MP.

We firmly believe that if an MP wishes to join a different party—whether it be the NDP, Conservative Party, Bloc, Green Party, or Liberal Party—a by-election should be held. This would enable the citizens of the affected riding to voice their approval or disapproval of such a decision, ultimately maintaining the democratic process we cherish.

The decision to cross the floor should not be taken lightly both by the Members of Parliament and by the parliamentary system that allows it. Holding a by-election will empower citizens to decide if they want to continue with the MP who has changed their political stripes. It will ensure transparency, respect, and alignment with the constituents’ original mandate.

Let's stand together to call on the Canadian Parliament to introduce legislation that prevents MPs from unilaterally making party affiliation changes without the direct consent of their voters. Let us remember that we, the citizens – not the politicians – are the owners of this democracy.
