Prevent felony records from limiting employment opportunities
The Issue
As a community leader, I've watched friends, neighbors, and families struggle with the stigma of a felony conviction long after they have paid their debt to society. These individuals are not just numbers in a system; they are real people, each with a unique story, who simply want a chance to rebuild their lives. Yet, they face an enormous hurdle when it comes to finding gainful employment, a critical step toward rehabilitation and reintegration into their communities.
The reality is stark: studies show that unemployment rates for those with a FELONY record can be as high as 27%—over five times the general population—to the disappointment and detriment of families and larger communities. This systemic barrier deprives our economy of potential labor and talent, while also increasing recidivism rates. According to a report by the Brennan Center for Justice, the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction may lead to an estimated $78 to $87 billion in lost GDP every year in the United States.
This petition seeks to encourage employers to adopt "fair chance hiring" practices. By focusing on a candidate's skills and experience rather than past mistakes, we can offer all individuals the opportunity to contribute positively and fully to society. This includes taking proactive steps like "banning the box," meaning employers would delay inquiries about an applicant's criminal history until later in the hiring process, allowing individuals the opportunity to showcase their qualifications first.
Enacting these changes not only gives individuals a fair shot at employment but can significantly benefit the economy, decrease crime rates, and build stronger communities. States that have implemented fair hiring laws have already seen improvements. For instance, research from the National Employment Law Project shows that jurisdictions with "ban the box" regulations saw a 33% reduction in hiring disparities and improvements in public safety metrics.
To foster the rehabilitation and reintegration of those who have made mistakes and have since reformed, I urge lawmakers and employers to give a chance for redemption. It’s time to tear down these unjust barriers, welcome our returning citizens, and allow all people the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives.
Please sign this petition to support a fairer job market for everyone and to ensure our communities can thrive and grow stronger.
