Prevent Drug Youth Drug Abuse in Saskatchewan

The Issue

An urgent public health crisis is emerging in Saskatchewan.

One that threatens the prosperities of our communities and has negatively impacted families across the province. And for as new as this epidemic is, the terrifyingly rapid and recent growth of drug abuse among Saskatchewan youth, is an issue that should not be ignored.

The escalating crisis of drug abuse among youth in Saskatchewan has reached alarming proportions, mandating immediate and preventative actions. The more than ever widespread variety of potent substances, more specifically Fentanyl, has led to an increase in overdose fatalities, and greatly impacting young individuals across the province.

Saskatchewan recorded 464 suspected and confirmed overdose deaths in 2021, marking the highest number ever and a significant increase from previous years. That number has been estimated to have doubled in 2025. As from a report done by sasktoday.

However there is another side to drug abuse and influence that does not result in overdose. Addiction is not just a personal struggle. It is a societal issue that requires collective action. Many young people who become dependent on drugs do so as a means of coping with trauma, mental health disorders or social influence and pressure. Without proper help and recovery support, these youth face higher risks of struggle, this struggle includes facing homelessness, incarceration and additionally, premature death.

A study revealed that youth are the most at risk. Most overdose victims with opioid related substances between 18-30 years old nearly tripled between 2019-2024. This trend shines light on the need for early intervention and youth focused addiction recovery programs. Sadly overdose is not the only death that stems from a constant and persistent use of drugs, And the SaskNDP recognizes this issue, with their research showing that substance abuse often coexists with mental health struggles. In Saskatchewan 1 in 4 youth have engaged in self harm, and in a similar percentage have seriously considered suicide in the past year. These alarming statistics  highlight the urgent need for integrated mental health and addiction services.

In almost any and every way. The dangers of drugs are being amplified rapidly and aggressively.  More youth than ever are exposed to normalization of drugs as a result of social media. 2020 A study found that 70% of teenagers had seen drug related content on social media, which could influence attitudes and behaviours towards substance use.

What is truly heartbreaking about this issue is that as you read these numbers and see the death toll we often forget that these are people, not just statistics these numbers represent real people. Children, siblings, friends and family members who have lost their lives to an epidemic that could be prevented with the right policies in place. The current approach is failing, and it is time for Saskatchewan to prioritize recovery focused solutions. There is no denying that this issue is overwhelming, and may seem hard to overcome. The several different types of drugs, the hundreds of different ways that it may affect your life and the millions that it affects, It all seems Like to much.

But that does not mean we can't improve. That we can't take small steps together. To protect, support and embrace one another to combat this epidemic.

But how do we start?

We urge the Government of Saskatchewan to implement a comprehensive strategy that focuses on prevention, harm reduction and Public recovery services to battle youth drug abuse effectively. Instead of resorting to punitive measures that further isolate and expose vulnerable individuals. We must create an environment that prioritizes healing and long term rehabilitation.

The first action we should take to prevent this epidemic is Expanding supervised consumption sites. Supervised consumption facilities such as Prairie Harm reduction in Saskatoon, Have been proven to prevent overdoses and connect individuals with treatment services. These sites save lives By providing a safe environment where drugs can be tested for dangerous substances like fentanyl. Additionally we should enhance our mental Health and counselling services, Many young people turn to drugs to self medicate underlying trauma, anxiety or depression. However, Saskachtewan faces a shortage of mental health professionals, forcing many at-risk youth to wait months for appointments. We demand an increase in funding for school based counselling programs and hiring more mental health specialists to provide timely support.

The implementation of drug education in schools. The current drug education programs in Saskatchewan schools are outdated and ineffective. We propose evidence based material for youth to learn that goes beyond scare statistics and provides youth with accurate information about substances. I believe that Early education can play a significant role in preventing substance abuse before it starts. And lastly expanding our harm reduction initiatives, And although harm reduction does not enable drug use, it keeps people alive long enough to seek treatment.

Every young life lost to drug abuse is a preventable tragedy. By failing to act, we are allowing a public health crisis to continue unchecked. By signing this petition, you are supporting a call to action for our government to invest in long term solutions that prioritize prevention, mental health support and recovery services. The prevention of this issue isn't about solving a current problem. It is about bettering our province for the future
