Prevent Destruction of Historic Buildings in College Station

Prevent Destruction of Historic Buildings in College Station

The Issue

The charm and history of an early 1900s home in College Station, TX, is at immediate risk. This treasured part of our community is being razed to make way for a cheaply constructed duplex designed to house 12 students. Gone will be the beautiful, mature trees that have stood for decades, replaced by lifeless, stark white concrete slabs that lack the soul our neighborhood has cherished for over a century. Unfortunately, this is one of many homes in historic district that has been demolished over the last few years.

Beloved establishments like Harry's, a staple of the Texas A&M campus experience, have already fallen victim to this relentless wave of development. An iconic venue has been replaced by towering skyscrapers intended for student housing that are unlikely to fill to capacity. Despite numerous available housing options surrounding the campus, these developers press forward, prioritizing profit over heritage.

Historic properties embody the spirit and stories of College Station, linking us to our past and enriching our community's identity. The relentless focus on building new student accommodations threatens the very foundation of our community's unique character. The tragic loss of historic homes and venues reflects a larger pattern — a systematic erosion of our shared tradition in favor of impersonal developments.

There is a better way forward: **preservation and integration**. We can meet the housing needs of the Texas A&M student population without sacrificing the essence of what makes College Station special. The implementation of mixed-use development that combines restored historic landmarks with thoughtfully designed new structures can create vibrant streetscapes while respecting our cultural legacy.

We call upon developers, city planners, and university officials to halt any future projects that demolish historic sites. Protect our community's history by investing in the restoration and adaptive reuse of these significant sites. Prioritize partnerships with heritage conservation organizations to ensure a balanced approach.

Let's ensure that College Station remains a place where the past and the future coexist harmoniously. Sign this petition to preserve our rich history and maintain the unique character of our beloved community.
