The Issue

As a concerned parent in Saltville, VA, the safety of my son and all children in our community is my highest priority. Recently, I was alarmed to learn that Darrell DeBord, who has been charged with child sexual assault, is attending school functions. Allowing someone with such serious charges  to be present at events where children are present is deeply concerning to me and many other parents.

Child safety is of paramount importance. Our schools should be safe havens where parents can trust their children are secure. No child should be exposed to potential risk when attending a school event that is meant to be a fun and educational experience. It's essential to put measures in place to prevent individuals who are facing such serious charges from being in close proximity to our kids.

Statistics from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center reveal that about 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused by the time they turn 18. These alarming numbers highlight the need for immediate action to ensure our children's safety.

I propose that the school board and relevant authorities institute a policy that restricts individuals charged with serious sexual offenses from attending any school-related functions until their cases are resolved. This is not about declaring guilt before a trial but about taking preventive steps to protect our children while the legal processes are ongoing.

I urge other parents, guardians, and concerned community members to join me in this petition. We need to send a strong message to our school authorities that the safety of our children cannot be compromised. Signing this petition is an essential step toward making our schools and community a safer place for all our children.

Please stand with us in demanding action and sign this petition today to protect our kids and ensure a safe environment in Saltville, VA.
