My story begins with an unfortunate and deeply embarrassing event. I am a vulnerable adult living with severe mental health issues and I fell victim to an inhumane practice that preys on individuals like me. In the world of social housing, there are instances where couples manipulate vulnerable single adults into mutual exchanges of flats. I was forced cruelly tricked to swap my decent, newly-refurbished home for a dilapidated one, after all ready having to go through the Distress of my last permanent flat becoming condemned.  i was what they called a Decanted tenant and was reallocated from my last flat that was being condemned by a resettlement officer to a fully frefubished flat with brand new carpets & lino newly fitted bathroom newly fitted kitchen with brand new fitted mirrored wardrobe. all of this Distress on top loosing my happy ever after home that I lived in for nearly four years. i have lossed two beautiful flats in under 7mths. one flat was condemned, the other flat was taken by manipulation & cohursion & being told that the husband was having Epileptic sezures lots of times & abundances were called out several times & i was told he had 3 sezures in a row & was taken into hospital i was allso told that his carers said that he needs to move to be settled to significantly stop Epileptic sezures as i though he was going to possibly die. i felt pressured I was allso constantly pestered by both of them on a daily basis and of a night time via tx & msgr & them wanting to come around my flat to visit me. i was not of sound mind & now believe i had a lack of mental capacity while under extreme pressure & the misfortune of my previous flat being condemned were i was happly settled for several years thinking it was my permanent home but to my horror found out it was going to be condemned all of this on top of been subjected & imposed into doing this exchange. as I did provide proof of medical records showing my vulnerabilities. all of this has lead me towards extreme dire mental distress on top of my exsisting mental health and my physical health has allso gone into deep decline and thoughts of suicidal tendencies.

This coercive practice pivots on the dreadful reality that the victim, under immense pressure, is tricked into thinking there is no choice but to accept the offer. Sadly, the repercussions are felt when it is too late, plunging people into a state of distress & feeling of being violated. The deplorable conditions of the flats received in return further exacerbate their mental health conditions, potentially leading to suicide.

Our plea is to impose stricter measures and ensure adequate supervision and extra care for vulnerable people with complex mental health problems that have been made aware to landlords during property exchanges. All properties involved in an exchange situation require thorough inspections by the same officer to maintain fairness and equality. A critical inspection phase and extra support and contact with vulnerable adults would help safeguard the interest of vulnerable adults who may fall victim to malicious individuals, significantly reducing the chances of such unfortunate instances.
