For over 80 years, young and old from all over have enjoyed experiencing one of the wildest and most remote parks in the world at Big Bend National Park. Plans to demolish an historic building to make room for a modern restaurant in one of the most iconic areas of the park is simply wrong. Park plans will deprive people from enjoying the most scenic areas of the park in the comfort of the cooler higher elevations. As a result of the planned closure some senior citizens may not be able to return to the Chisos Mountains or see this area for the first time.
On July 3, 2025, President Trump signed two executive orders related to the conservation and improvement of America’s public lands and national parks. His Executive Orders calls upon the National Park Service to expand opportunities to enjoy America’s splendid national treasures. Closing the Chisos Basin for two years or more will not expand opportunities, but in actually decrease them in a really big way. The park’s plans to close this area will seriously impact the visitor experience making it more dangerous to explore the park because of the unforgiving desert environment in the lower elevations.
The Executive Order also calls upon the Secretary of the Interior to review all of the Department’s recreational access rules and take steps to rescind any that unnecessarily restrict recreation in national parks. Let’s hope that his review includes the plans at Big Bend National Park.
It’s time to rescind Big Bend National Park’s plans to close the Chisos Basin!
