As a distraught parent whose child has been a victim, I appeal to you in the utmost despair. My daughter has been the subject of vile sexual abuse committed by an individual now facing charges. Yet, in the turning gears of justice, a worrisome circumstance has emerged. This individual, despite the gravity of his heinous actions, may have his bond reduced, thus potentially enabling further harm. This is a tragic flaw in the justice system that needs to be addressed. Moreover, according to RAINN, Child sexual abuse is grossly underreported – only about 230 out of every 1,000 sexual abuses are reported to the police. Yet, we must not make it easier for perpetrators to re-offend after they've been apprehended. Our legal system must indeed respect the rights of the accused, but it must not minimize the crime's despicability and danger by reducing their bond. It is time for our judiciary to uphold its responsibility to protect the innocent, especially those most vulnerable amongst us—our children.
