The Issue

My girlfriend, who is Ukrainian, currently resides in the UK as the heart-wrenching war continues to wreak havoc in Ukraine. It pains us to see cultural ambivalence towards figures who, directly or indirectly, are associated with the leadership that has caused such turmoil and suffering. That's why it's deeply disturbing that Anna Netrebko, a known supporter of Vladimir Putin, has been scheduled to perform at London's prestigious opera house.

Anna Netrebko has long been linked with the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin, a figure notoriously responsible for the aggression and devastating conflict in Ukraine. Her unabashed support for Putin over the years is no secret. Despite various controversies, many cultural institutions continue to offer her platforms, lending credence to her actions and views. Allowing her to perform sends a message that affiliations with a regime responsible for countless atrocities can be overlooked in the name of art.

We must not allow our esteemed cultural venues to be tainted by associations with figures who support aggressive and oppressive regimes. By preventing Anna Netrebko from performing at the London opera house, we take a stand against artistic figures who appear to align themselves with political ideologies that bring harm to others.

Her performance presents an implicit endorsement of the very governance that stands in stark contrast to democratic values and humanity. It's essential for cultural institutions to maintain their stance as neutral spaces, not aligned with oppressive regimes. Art should be a reflection of society's highest ideals, and providing a stage to those who seemingly support tyranny undermines these ideals.

We urge the opera house to reconsider its decision and set a precedent that despots and their supporters will not enjoy a platform in our society. Revoking Netrebko's invitation would send a strong message: artistic talent does not excuse political irresponsibility.

Please join us in urging the London opera house to cancel Anna Netrebko's performance in solidarity with Ukraine's struggle for peace and sovereignty. Help ensure that our cultural spaces remain havens for peace, justice, and truth. Sign the petition and make your voice heard against the normalization of oppression.
