A tragedy struck our community not long ago when a 12-year-old was shot and killed in our neighborhood. This heart-wrenching event united the business owners and residents of the Denby/Whittier area to work tirelessly towards fostering a positive, safe, and thriving community for all. We envisioned a neighborhood that stands as one of Detroit's fastest-growing, with facilities that cater to families, children, churches, and day cares.

Now, a proposal to open a strip club in the heart of our neighborhood threatens to undo all the hard work and progress we have made. This establishment does not align with the family-friendly vision we've built, nor does it represent the safer, more prosperous community we aspire to be. The introduction of this strip club could potentially spike crime rates and reverse our efforts to curb violence, prostitution, and blight.

Our dedicated efforts in rehabilitation and positive development have seen real benefits. Denby/Whittier is becoming a beacon of positive change thanks to a community that cares about its future. We’ve refurbished local facilities to serve as hubs of learning, wellness, and family engagement. Allowing a strip club to open in our midst runs directly counter to these achievements and threatens to undermine them.

Studies have shown that adult entertainment establishments can contribute to increased crime rates in neighborhoods. As reported by Channel 4 News, neighborhoods around similar businesses have sometimes seen a rise in related incidents. Protecting our neighborhood from this risk reinforces our commitment to keeping Denby/Whittier a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

We propose exploring alternative avenues for economic development that align with the neighborhood's values and goals. Rather than a strip club, ventures that promote family activities, health, or education would better serve our community. Projects like community centers or local businesses can generate jobs and activities without compromising the safety and integrity of our neighborhood.
