Prevent a Mass Eviction by a Foreign Landlord – Protect Families and Killarney’s Heritage

Prevent a Mass Eviction by a Foreign Landlord – Protect Families and Killarney’s Heritage
The Issue
Fourteen families in the Loreto Convent Estate, Killarney, are facing eviction by XERICO, a foreign landlord registered in Cyprus. Every single home they own in the estate has been served with a Notice of Termination. If this proceeds, more than 40 people, including infants, schoolchildren, and people with disabilities, will be made homeless.
This is not just about housing. It is about:
- Children’s futures: 13 children currently attend the local national school, some needing extra supports. Three must now apply for secondary school, but with their homes gone, where are they supposed to apply? Different counties? Different countries? One child will be left behind without the friends he grew up with.
- A community destroyed: For years, neighbours here have built a small, supportive community. Evicting all of us tears that apart overnight.
Local businesses at risk: Workers forced out of Killarney will leave businesses struggling to keep staff. - Heritage under threat: On the estate grounds sits the former Loreto Convent, a protected building and part of Killarney’s history. Its future is being left in the hands of a shell company and its subcontractors, rather than the community it belongs to.
- Killarney is already in a housing crisis. Rents are too high, and homes are almost impossible to find. Forcing dozens more people into homelessness is not just unethical – it damages the whole town’s stability and economy.
We call on Kerry County Council and the authorities of Killarney to act immediately.
This eviction can be stopped through a Tenant-in-Situ purchase, an Approved Housing Body partnership, or any other available mechanism.
We urge you to protect these families, safeguard the community, support local businesses, and preserve Killarney’s heritage.
