Pressure Howard University to resolve student unenrollment issues

The Issue

On July 22, 2026, I, along with over a hundred other students, were suddenly unenrolled from Howard University. Just thirteen days before move-in week, we found ourselves dropped from our registered classes and labeled as inactive, all due to past-due balances on our accounts. Many of us, including myself, rely on scholarships, loans, and financial support to attend our dream school, and unforeseen circumstances can often delay these needed funds.

The University's Financial Aid Office and Office of the Bursar had repeatedly assured us that as long as our balances were below $5,000, we would be allowed to register and attend classes, with payments expected only before the Spring Semester. I've been caught in the unfair situation where despite adhering to the guidelines and awaiting promised financial aid, my entire semester's plans and academic progression are jeopardized.

This abrupt disenrollment process not only disrupts students' education but also causes undue stress, anxiety, and challenges which can impede our academic excellence. This situation should not happen to any student striving for an education despite financial constraints. Howard University must acknowledge these systemic issues and work towards humane solutions.

I urge Howard University to rectify this unwarranted disenrollment and immediately reinstate affected students. Furthermore, a re-evaluation of financial policies should be conducted to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Howard University should ensure transparency, better financial planning support, and timely communication with the students regarding their financial standings and enrollment status.

Howard University has a legacy of empowering young individuals to achieve academic success despite financial obstacles. Continuation of this proud legacy requires addressing this urgent situation promptly and compassionately.

I invite students, alumni, faculty, and all concerned members of the Howard University community to sign this petition to protect the educational rights of its students. Stand with us in demanding action and change to secure the future of every student impacted by this unenrollment crisis.
