Presidio Wall Pickleball Evening Play & Improvements
The Issue
Hello and thank you for signing this petition to express your support for the following three objectives.
First, restoring evening pickleball play at Presidio Wall until dark as was permitted until June 2026 in lieu of the new rules stopping play at 6:00 PM or 7:30 PM depending on the time of year.
Second, repainting courts 1-2 for pickleball and tennis (as currently configured) for everyone’s enjoyment. The lines are barely visible in some areas.
Third, planning for installation of acoustic fencing or similar tools for mitigating the sound of gameplay, particularly along the south fence line closest to residences (e.g., offerings from Acoustiblok, etc.).
Some additional thoughts regarding the new evening playtime restrictions, which may not necessarily be the perspective of all petition signees:
At issue is only 30-90 minutes, depending on the season, that disproportionately impact those who work through early/mid-evening and cannot otherwise participate.
It’s unclear what, if any, outreach was made to the community before enacting the new restrictions to solicit input and/or evaluate alternatives. The appearance is that a handful of neighbors are disproportionately influencing policy for public space at the expense of thousands of other voting taxpayers. The new restrictions are unique to Presidio Wall despite other pickleball courts throughout SF being located in similar proximity to residences.
Significant compromises have already been made for nearby homes and tennis players, including:
The permanent removal of pickleball from courts 3-4 nearest to residences (2 tennis courts / 6 pickleball courts, half of the total at Presidio Wall).
Restricting morning pickleball play before 9:00 AM, a change from 7:00 AM.
Courts 1-2 are shared with high school tennis teams for approximately 6 months of the year that play nearly every weekday during prime seasons and timeframes, spring and fall, late afternoons through early evenings.
Many pickleball players at Presidio Wall who enjoy evening playtime are also residents of neighboring Presidio Heights, Presidio Terrace other nearby neighborhoods. We want to play while also being respectful of others. We request that our input be considered to help find reasonable compromises for all who enjoy Presidio Wall and its surrounding communities.
In an era of divisiveness and high costs, pickleball is unique in its accessibility and ability to unite diverse groups while providing essential physical and mental health benefits.
Thank you for making the time to read and consider this petition and its supporting commentary.
