A Bandung Zoo Update...
As you all know, I recently sent a letter outlining an offer of assistance to the Bandung Zoo managers. I gave them until July 15, 2017 (approx two weeks) to respond and I have yet to hear from them.
Earlier this year, the Bandung Zoo ended up in the spotlight because it had been mismanaged to point of animals starving (sun bears) and dying (critically endangered elephant).
Early on, prior to making international headlines, the Bandung Zoo was offered help by two reputable non-profit groups in Indonesia. The zoo management said no. It literally took months of mounting pressure and government intervention to get the zoo to start feeding the animals consistently.
After visiting Indonesia and having the Bandung Zoo managers refuse to meet with me, I consulted a reputable, accomplished, international NGO about programs that had been successful in similar regions. I then formulated an offer to send in zoo management professionals and animal enrichment specialists to work with their staff. I also asked for some reasonable concessions for the animals but sadly, I received no response.
I am beginning to think that there are other motives in play. Here are just a few of the red flags at the Bandung Zoo…
1. A “critically endangered” Sumatran elephant dies at the Bandung Zoo due to an illness caused by unsanitary conditions and lack of veterinary / basic care.
2. The sun bears were starving and begging visitors for food and it took government intervention and international pressure to force the zoo to start feeding the animals.
3. A sun bear expert, as recently as 2/17, one month after the story of the starving Sun Bear went viral, noted that there were Sun Bears at the Bandung Zoo that appeared to be lactating but there were no cubs.
4. Bandung Zoo appears to have aligned with a questionable non-profit group out of Australia who vehemently defends the zoo to the point of lying, attacking, stalking, etc… This non-profit group does not have any formal expertise in zoo operations or management. And it appears they are supported by / aligned with the people who own the safari parks in Indonesia. One of these safari parks was recently accused of DRUGGING ANIMALS that are part of the BABY ANIMAL ZOO in the park. These drugged animals are then forced to pose for pictures with tourists. See this video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7mXfiH4xBg
Unsanitary conditions, dead animals, hungry animals, missing baby animals and a non-profit trying to sell the falsehood that everything is great at the Bandung Zoo??? The obvious question is what is the Bandung Zoo hiding and why is this non-profit helping them hide it?
The problems facing the animals in Indonesia are extensive and severe and they reach far beyond this one zoo. And while the Sun Bears are now being fed, due to government intervention and monitoring, there are still questions and concerns about this zoo's practices and sustainability. I will keep pressing and keep you posted.
In the meantime, I will continue to help other animals in need in Indonesia and will assist the reputable, Indonesia-based organizations working on the front lines.
Thank you all for being a part of this complicated and important journey.
