Implement Pass/Fail at GMU for Fall 2020

Implement Pass/Fail at GMU for Fall 2020
The Issue
In light of recent events surrounding racial injustices (as recognized by President Washington’s e-mail) and the world pandemic, we strongly urge the university to switch back to pass/fail. Considering Mason has already raised tuition for the online semester during a pandemic, times have already been extremely trying for GMU students this semester. When this grading system was implemented in the spring semester, it very clearly removed a considerable amount of stress off our students. Not only will this allow students to focus more on their health, but also their well being. This pandemic is not only a medical crisis, but also a mental health crisis. Additionally, BIPOC students are also having to deal with increasing racial trauma and injustice during this already uncertain time. Many students have voiced that they feel overwhelmed and overworked attempting to get decent grades in online classes (making it much harder for majority of students to learn) during this terrible year. We know this would make it easier for our students who are already struggling under racial and other traumas, as well as working multiple jobs due to COVID-19 economic instability. Switching to pass/fail would be a way to show the university is willing to take tangible action to support students.
