Hello conscientious folks,

This petition has been up for over two years. Trinity has not divested, the climate crisis rages on, and we have empty, insufficient pledges by the fossil fuel sector and the governments they bankroll.

But that isn't the full story. We also have a growing movement of people who are calling B.S. at our leaders and who recognize the moral urgency of this pivotal moment to save our planet. Universities around the world are pulling assets out of fossil fuels and movements are taking control of governments. Harvard University, the wealthiest university in the world, successfully divested from fossil fuels after years of dedicated advocacy from students, alumni, and faculty.

As Earth Week approaches, April 17-23, we plan to introduce and pass a student government (SGA) resolution that is backed by Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) clubs and progressive advocacy clubs on campus. We need your help to make this possible. Join this mailing list if you are interested in potentially offering some help, big or small, to make this happen. That might mean showing up to an SGA meeting or making a protest sign. You can contribute any way you think would be best for you.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently came out with a report that says that fossil fuel emissions need to peak in the next three years and then precipitously fall if we want any reasonable chance at preventing cascading and irreversible climate change. Unless we stop the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure and start to quickly abandon existing infrastructure, the seas will swamp major cities and island nations, coral reefs and ecosystems all over the world will collapse, and countless beings will experience deprivation, displacement, and death. This is dark.

But the society that truly addresses this crisis can enable us to live much better. We can create millions of well-paid jobs, ensure marginalized people are treated with dignity, distribute resources more fairly, and free ourselves from needless work. Fossil fuel companies are a major obstacle to this agenda, let alone a livable future. Let's make sure Trinity's $1.7 billion endowment finally acknowledges that.
