Despite the rush of energy and positive expectation of change to our gun laws from all the gun violence prevention groups after the Umpqua massacre—the chance of legislation being passed to do so is from "slim to none."
In an article in CNN politics.com by Stephen Collinson, October 3, 2015 he observers "Obama by his own admission, has now become a little more than a grim scorekeeper after mass gun massacres…He seems destined to turn off the lights at the White House in 16 months without substantial change on gun legislation."
Since Sandy Hook, which many thought would be a "tipping point," gun laws in the great majority of states have been weakened and nothing has been done at the federal level. Five states have passed laws banning any law being passed that would require training for anyone carrying a gun in public—nine more are set to do the same. The insanity is breathtaking.
Collinson further notes “The chances of meaningful gun control reform are slim to none until the political mix changes in Washington – – and that could take years, since Republicans who rely on a base of voters resistant to such measures control the House of Representatives and the Senate.
It is telling that "Republican presidential candidates reacted to Thursday shooting (at UMPQUA) by uniformly resisting new gun control measures. Senator Marco Rubio, for instances said "there is just no evidence that these gun laws would prevent these shootings.”
In point of fact, there is overwhelming evidence that strong gun laws would do precisely what Rubio dismisses. In England in 1996 after the Dunblane school massacre where 16 children and one teacher were slaughtered they passed strong gun laws and since that date— 29-years ago—there has been one mass shooting in England.
In Australia, after the horrific mass shooting at Port Author in 1996 in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded at a popular tourist site they passed strict gun laws. In the 18 years prior to Port Author, there had been 13 mass shootings. Since the new gun control laws in 1996—there has not been a single mass shooting.
Insanity, some say, is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's time to try something new and for President Obama to respond to our gun violence epidemic by declaring a state of emergency which would allow him to make the required changes immediately by executive order.
