Kids In Need of Defense

On Monday, federal Judge Dolly M. Gee ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to amend a long-standing settlement agreement to allow the government to hold children indefinitely in unlicensed family detention facilities. This is a huge win for our campaign, but unfortunately not yet a victory. Trump will in all likelihood appeal the decision, and use it as an opportunity to further the administration's attacks on migrant and refugee children and families. In fact, the Office of Refugee Resettlement is reportedly budgeting to house thousands more immigrant children, reallocating funds earmarked for HIV patients and refugee resettlement. This is happening even as the administration struggles to reunite the thousands of families it tore apart and to comply with court-ordered deadlines for their reunification. Meanwhile, DHS Secretary Nielsen remains focused on preventing people from seeking humanitarian protection in this country. We at KIND know that our nation’s security and humanity are not mutually exclusive – let’s tell Secretary Nielsen that. Click here to tweet at her: https://bit.ly/2L62lpr. We will continue to update you on the situation as more news is released.
