Kids In Need of Defense
Jul 6, 2018
We now have confirmation that the Trump administration plans to detain immigrant children with their families while they await immigration proceedings – in other words, indefinitely. The administration is using a San Diego injunction requiring them to reunite families as an excuse to ignore the long-standing Flores settlement, which prevents children from being held in detention unnecessarily for lengthy periods. But the truth is, the administration could stop detaining children and their parents immediately by ending its cruel and ineffective “zero tolerance” policy. We believe that it was always Trump’s plan to detain children. We also know that these increases in family detention will be very difficult to reverse, even under another administration. It is crucial that we act now to stop it, before it’s too late. Today we’re calling DHS to demand that children be kept out of long-term immigrant detention. Will you join us? Email DHS’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties here: crcl@dhs.gov ** You can paste in this letter: ** I’m writing to express my deep concern over efforts to hold immigrant children indefinitely in prison-like detention facilities. Immigrants are not a security threat to our country, and immigrant detention centers are unequipped to humanely house families fleeing violence, much less traumatized children. I am one of 413,000 people who’ve signed a petition calling for a stop to the expansion of family detention: change.org/ChildDetention. We are asking you to please use your power to keep children out of cages. Sincerely, [Your Name] ** Once you’re done, leave a comment below letting us know that you called! **
