It’s been a couple months since Judge Dolly M. Gee rejected the Trump administration’s request to modify the longstanding Flores settlement agreement to enable the indefinite detention of children in unlicensed family jails. On Thursday, the Justice Department appealed the court’s decision, and today, the government published proposed regulations seeking to similarly expand the use of family detention and to terminate the Flores settlement.

The proposed regulations would undermine basic protections for migrant and refugee children and could lead to children being held in family jails for months, or years. Tell the Administration that you won’t stand for this.

The proposed regulations allow the government flexibility to undermine the conditions that children face in federal custody and to strip unaccompanied children of vital protections that help to ensure their ability to meaningfully present their cases for humanitarian relief.

This is not how we treat children.

For the next 60 days, the administration will be accepting public comments on the proposed regulations. It’s crucial that we use this opportunity to tell the government that further attacks on children and families and expanded family detention are not the solution to family separation. And that the American people will not let this happen on our watch.
