Katarina Keeley started this petition to President Stanley

Hi,

I wrote this email to President Stanley a week ago to express my concerns regarding the upcoming class format.

However, more students have expressed the same concerns as me. So, I thought why not and start a petition.

Hi, my name is Katarina Keeley, and I am a third-year senior here at MSU. I understand that you have a very busy schedule, but I still wanted to write this to you. First, I want to say thank you for making the first three weeks of this semester online. I understand that some students struggle with the online format, but I proved to myself in 2020 that I can still receive high marks by taking my classes online. I feel much more comfortable taking these classes online due to sicknesses that spread on campus. In fact, one of my roommates recently got covid and a co-worker of mine at Impact89FM did as well. They are recovering slowly, but surely. I feel bad for them, however I am relieved that I do not need to be on-campus due to this current class format.

I am writing this email to you because I believe, after these three weeks have passed, that Professors should give students the option to finishing their courses online if they choose to. Last semester, I was grateful for a Professor that gave students the option to zoom in or come in-person (especially with my minor health issues). I showed up to class in-person throughout the whole semester but had to zoom in a couple of times due to some emergencies. Plus, there were class periods last semester in which I was in a classroom with students who all had a cold. I did not feel comfortable being there, however being a student is a huge priority of mine. I did not want to miss class. As I have said, I proved to myself that I can receive high marks by still taking classes online. I do not see why that cannot still be an option for some students after these three weeks are over. Professors should teach their classes in a way that best suits everyone's needs. No student or professor should be forced to doing something that makes them uncomfortable.

I keep hearing people say, "well, everyone will probably catch covid," but I do not believe that is a fair statement. Students should make their grades as a top priority, however if there is anything that 2020 taught us it is that our health should be just as big of a priority.

I realize that I work for the student radio station and do my work in-person. The work that I do with them is a lot more "hands-on." I am comfortable doing work in-person with them, if of course we all wear our masks and people are vaccinated. I just believe that if there is a way for students to reduce their risk of catching covid in some circumstances, then that would be for the best. I believe that everyone has a right to choose what they do in their day-to-day lives, including if that means going to a sports game. However, if there are still ways in which students can reduce their risk of catching COVID-19 and spreading it, then I believe that would be great for all of our MSU Spartans.

I hope you receive this and hope to hear back from you. Thank you so much for your time. I hope that you have a great evening.

Sincerely,
Katarina Keeley
