Following a day of action for dreamers and other immigrant communities at Florida International University, several FIU students were targeted by FIU's College Republican Chapter. The Miami New Times reported that the chats for the College Republicans were rife with calls for violence, even mocking the death of Heather Heyer in Charlotesville. Other students who courageously outed themselves as Dreamers or Daca recipients were made into memes, and were threatened with deportation. Others threatened to call ICE on their classmates, and discussed their gun purchases and stocking up on weapons that have been used in mass shootings before they're outlawed.
The College Republicans at FIU did not deny knowing that these types of conversations were happening on their behalf, and they did not expel any members or engage in any disciplinary action against them. Their inaction speaks loudly: the FIU Chapter of College Republicans condones threatening vulnerable communities with violence, intimidation, and legal action simply for existing in the same space.
Since the College Republicans are not willing to discipline their own, we are calling on FIU to take immediate action so that our minority student population feels safe going to school. Threats of intimidation should not be taken lightly by our administration. Considering that FIU was only recently willing to crack down on sexual harassment allegations stemming from a fraternity on campus after media picked up the story, the FIU community wants to see stronger leadership from our administration. With the support of all Panthers, we want to be able to send a message that discrimination will not be tolerated by anyone at FIU.
