McDaniel College adopts a Chosen Name Policy. This is just the start of making McDaniel College a safe and accepting campus from the Trans* community. As a trans male, I can say not having to see an old name on my ID card, or having to announce to the whole class on the first day that I go by a different name than what the roster says after the old name gets called out even after I've spoken to the professor, is all a huge lift off my shoulders. As a transguy, unwillingly "outting" myself should never have to be feared. Yes, I am open about being transgender and my journey, but I'm just one person, and so many others are just trying to live as who they are without being judged or disrespected because we aren't the "norm". Addressing someone properly as they respectifully request is the smallest thing you can do to put the biggest smile on a trans* person's face, whether you know they're transgender or not (because it's none of your business to know unless they want you to). Thank you for helping the growing trans* population at McDaniel feel a little more at home.
