Remove Columbus Day and make Election Day a national holiday instead.
The Issue
In order to be a more perfect union, voting should be readily accessible to those Americans who have jobs and families and struggle to make room on a random Tuesday to go to the polls.
Making Election Day a national holiday is a well-documented movement and idea, yet opposition to it insists that small businesses would take a financial hit with the addition of another holiday to the calendar.
Therefore we, the undersigned, propose eliminating the Columbus Day holiday—especially since historians have revealed the unsavory truth about his treatment of the native population he encountered here—and transpose that holiday to Election Day one month later.
This way businesses will not suffer an additional burden, yet every American with the desire will then be able to vote.
