Over the course of the last two months, the people of Ukraine have engaged in a long and difficult struggle against the ruling government. What started off with protests against turning away from the European Union-Ukraine Association Agreement, quickly turned into a struggle for the Ukrainian people’s democratic rights and civil liberties – a struggle for a government that represented their interests rather than its own. In reaction to the people’s peaceful protest and demands for their voices to be heard, the Ukrainian government has responded with violence and repression. This includes repeated beatings of students, activists, journalists and opposition Members of Parliament as well as legal prosecutions against those involved.

On January 16, 2014, the Ukrainian government committed actions that revealed their complete disrespect for the democratic process, the rights of the Ukrainian people and their intent on creating a police state in Ukraine. During this session of parliament, Members of Parliament (MP) from the Party of Regions decided to vote anti-protest bills into law by hand raise as oppose to the proper electronic voting method which ensures that every MP casts his or her own vote. On top of this, photographic evidence exists to show that rather than the 235 votes that were supposedly cast by Party of Regions MPs, only 118-120 were actually in attendance. This is a complete violation of the Ukrainian Constitution and is slowly eroding the last remnants of democracy in Ukraine.

In response to this new law, the Ukrainian people came out on the streets of Kyiv once again. This time; however, tensions boiled over and what had been a peaceful movement turned violent. Clashes between police and protestors ensued. On January 22, 2014, Ukrainian news sources reported that protestors were killed during an effort by the police to dismantle barricades set up on Hrushevskoho Street in Kyiv and disperse the protestors. The situation is quickly spinning out of control.

The people of Ukraine have repeatedly asked for U.S. support. The United States government has issued statements saying that it backs the Ukrainian people’s democratic aspirations, but little more. Senate Resolution 319 – approved by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations – states that if further state violence against the people of Ukraine occurs, then sanctions, such as visa bans and assest freezes, will be considered. Further state violence has occurred within the last few days resulting in protestor deaths in Kyiv. It is time to uphold previous statements and the contents of Senate Resolution 319.

Please sign this petition and tell the President of the United States, the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives that they must act now to impose targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for ordering the repression of the democratic rights and civil liberties of the Ukrainian people and state violence in Ukraine.
