SOUTH HAVEN, MI – State Funeral for World War II Veterans is pleased to announce James "Doc" McCloughan, recipient of the Medal of Honor for bravery in Vietnam, was appointed a National Board Member. He is President Donald Trump’s 1st Medal of Honor recipient. The White House ceremony took place last July 31, 2017.
Last Labor Day, State Funeral for World War II Veterans launched a nationwide petition drive to convince the President of the United States to designate a state funeral in Washington, D.C. for the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from World War II. Today over 7,000 petitions have been signed and the non-profit organization is organized in more than 26 states.
This single state funeral would provide special recognition and serve as a final salute to the 16 million men and women who served in our armed forces from 1941 to 1945.
Former Army medic McCloughan said “Out of 16 million who served in World War II, only about 500,000 are still with us. They deserve special recognition at a state funeral for one of their own.”
In total, 464 Medals of Honor were awarded to World War II servicemen. Only four of these recipients are living today. All were enlisted men. They are Hershel “Woody” Williams, U.S. Marine Corp Corporal of West Virginia; Charles Coolidge, U.S. Army Technical Sergeant of Tennessee; Robert D. Maxwell, U.S. Army Technician Fifth Grade of Oregon; and Francis S. Currey, U.S. Army Private First Class of New York.
“The United States has held many State Funerals for President’s and Generals, but never one for an enlisted man,” said Bill McNutt, Co-Founder and Chairman. “We are working hard with great patriots like Jim McCloughan to make this final salute to the greatest generation possible. "
A graduate of Bangor High School and Olivet College, James resides in his hometown South Haven, Michigan. After earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in sociology and a teaching certificate in 1968, he accepted a teaching and football coaching position at South Haven High School.
McCloughan taught sociology and psychology at South Haven High School until his retirement in 2008 earning him the Michigan Education Associations’ 40 years of Service Award. He was also the recipient of the Wolverine Conference Distinguished Service Award for 38 years of coaching football and baseball in addition to 22 years of coaching wrestling.
His coaching career was exceptional, and McCloughan received a number of awards for his 38 years of coaching. He is a member of the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame and the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
“Jim brings his diverse background and leadership experience to the role of National Board member,” said Ron Ramseyer, National Founding Board member. “The National Board of Directors joins me in welcoming a second Medal of Honor recipient to our board. It is an honor to serve along side men like Don Ballard and Jim McLoughlin.”
Michigan produced thirteen World War II Medal of Honor recipients, including Sergeant Johnson Jr Oscar Godfrey, Foster City for his gallantry near Scarperia, Italy in September 1944 where he practically single-handed protected the left flank of his company's position in the offensive to break the German's gothic line.
